Maasai Mara National Reserve
Maasai Mara National Reserve is located in Narok County in Kenya next to Serengeti National Park. It is named after the Maasai people who are the ancestral inhabitants of the area. Maasai Mara is famous for the annual wildebeest migration.
Getting to Maasai – Distance from Nairobi to Maasai Mara
The distance from Nairobi to Maasai Mara (Sekenani gate) is about 260 km. Driving to Maasai Mara from Nairobi takes about 5-6 hours depending on which property you are visiting. Flying to Maasai Mara takes about 40-45 minutes.
Maasai Mara Gates
Maasai Mara National Reserve has 4 main entry gates.
- Ololomutiek Gate
- Sekenani Gate – The Sekenani Gate is located on the Eastern border in the suburbs of Sekenani Town.
- Talek Gate – The Talek gate is located in the North-Western side of Masai Mara, this area is great for game viewing because of the large open Savannah grassland next to the famous Talek River.
- Musiara Gate
Most of these Gates are not tarmacked from Narok Town. (the road from Narok to Sekenani is in the process of being tarmacked).
The Best time to visit Masai Mara
You can visit Maasai Mara at any time of the year and see wildlife. The best time to witness the great wildebeest migration is from July to October every year.
